Kabelo Petrus Motha, known as Kabza De Small, is a South African DJ and producer whose name has become inseparable from the rise of amapiano. Born in Mpumalanga and raised in Pretoria, he began experimenting with music in his teenage years, teaching himself production and gradually shaping the sound that would later bring him fame.
Kabza started releasing projects in the mid-2010s, but his early work mainly introduced him to small but loyal audiences. His career turned sharply upward in 2018 with the release of Umshove, a song that marked the arrival of a new amapiano wave. The track didn’t just make him popular, it gave amapiano itself a bigger platform within South African house music.
The following year, Kabza joined forces with DJ Maphorisa to form the Scorpion Kings, a partnership that produced a run of influential albums and hit singles. Together, they brought amapiano from local clubs to international charts, with projects that showcased both soulful instrumentals and dance-floor energy.
In 2020, Kabza released I Am the King of Amapiano: Sweet & Dust, a double album that underscored his dominance in the genre. Its success cemented his reputation as not just a hitmaker but a cultural figure driving South Africa’s global musical identity.
Today, Kabza De Small continues to push amapiano into new spaces. His music resonates with fans across Africa, Europe, and beyond, and his consistency has made him a touchstone for younger producers. More than a performer, he stands as an innovator who helped turn amapiano into one of the defining sounds of modern African music.
